Strata: cytoMek design
An update on the design of Strata’s main character – the cytoMek (cyto-mechanic).
A cytoMek can manipulate and combine the cellular structure of objects and create new life forms or affect the environment. In Strata, you play as the last of the cytoMeks, exploring the underworlds of Yeru.
The mask is a necessary item in the world of Strata, since below a certain altitude, the ground is covered by a poisonous cloud. The mask is influenced by traditional African tribal designs.
I’m more inclined in going for the stylized visual style for the art direction of the game. More flexibility, and less stress on the systems (both technical and artistic).

Flip Image horizontal shortcut for Photoshop and Wacom table
Flipping an image horizontally when drawing is critical to make sure that there’s no weird distortion or mistakes in the drawing.
If you’re using a Wacom tablet, then setting that shortcut to one of the side buttons can be very helpful.
There are a couple of ways of doing that. One is to set up a Photoshop action (Edit>Transform>Flip Horizontal) and assigning it to an F-key or simply typing in the shortcut itself:
Alt+e a h
1. Go to your Wacom tablet properties, select the Functions icon in the Tool section, and Photoshop in the Application section.
2. Under the ExpressKeys tab, select Keystroke and enter either the F-key or the shortcut mentioned above.
Voila. Happy flipping.
HTML5 clobbering the competition?
Adobe announced that it is dropping support for Flash mobile and instead going to focus on HTML5. Good news, I guess. On that note, Scirra – a small start-up from London, England – is developing its platformer game engine called Construct 2, that supports HTML5 game development. And here at Quantum Grey, we are happy to announce that we are going to start putting it through it’s paces.
Strata is going into pre-production mode. Game mechanics are being developed, and concept art is beginning to get churned out. Stay tuned for updates coming shortly to a post near you.
